If you are looking forward to grow tomatoes and want to get good quality seeds then good news for you – Tomato seeds can be obtained easily from the tomatoes bought from market.  The only problem is the transparent gel like coating around tomatoes seeds which stops seeds from germinating. So in order to get some viable and ready to sprout seeds, you need to remove the gel coating through a process known as fermentation.

Below is the step by step procedure of getting tomato seeds.

Get some fresh and healthy looking tomatoes. Selected tomatoes shouldn’t be having any scars or any type of visible damage.

Set the tomato upright and slice it in half horizontally. Make the cut through middle.

Scoop out the pulp containing seeds in a glass jar or plastic container.

Try to segregate the seeds from the pulp with help of a spoon.

Add some water to the jar or container and cover it with a lid. Plastic sheet can be used as a cover too. In case of plastic sheet, poke a small hole to let air in the container. It enhances the fermentation process. Keep the container in an open, out of direct sun place because fermentation produces a bad odor. A white layer forms on completion of fermentation. The whole process takes 2-3 days.

Remove the white mold layer carefully using spoon.

Place the container under running water and let the water run off the top, it will remove the pulp floating on the surface. Seeds will settle down at the bottom.

Now spread the seeds on a wax coated paper plate. Avoid using tissue paper as wet seeds tend to stick to it (experienced while performing doing the same) and it can be difficult to remove them once they are dried. Once the seeds are thoroughly dried, rub the seeds off the paper plate and store in an air tight container, in a cool dry place or in freezer.
