Best tips for growing Carnation of India (Tabernaemontana divaricata) at home

Carnation of India (Tabernaemontana divaricata) is an evergreen shrub grown for beautiful pinwheel shaped fragrant flowers. Native to India, Tabernaemontana’s leaves are dark green and pointed. The plant grows to a height of 4-6 feet with spread of 6 feet. It is also known as Crape jasmine,butterfly gardenia and pinwheel flower. It can be grown in container easily. The other variety of carnation of India is famous too which has double layered flowers.

 

Propagation

Carnation of India is propagated through stem cuttings. Take 4-5 inches long softwood cutting (current year’s growth). Remove all leaves leaving 2-3 leaves at the top. Pinch out the growing point, doing so increases chances of rooting.  Dip the base of the cutting in a rooting hormone. However this step is optional. Insert the cutting 1-2 inches deep in soil mix in container and cover it with plastic bag.  Place the container in a shaded place.

 

Container

However carnation of India can be grown in container successfully but it wouldn’t reach to its full height. Choose a large 12 inches high container. Container should have drainage holes to ensure water drainage out of the container. Put brick pieces or small stones on the drainage holes.

 

Soil

Carnation of India grows in almost any kind of soil. Important thing is that the soil should be well

draining. Add perlite or organic matter like compost or garden manure to improve draining capability of the soil.

 

Sun / Temperature

Carnation of India grows well in full sun. Partial shade won’t hamper the growth.

 

Watering

The plant has average water requirements. Increase the watering frequency in summer and cut down it in winter. Aim for moist soil always. Water the carnation of India whenever you notice dry, cracked soil near the plant base. Never over water it.

 

Fertilizer

Mix the soil with organic matter like farmyard manure or garden compost in spring when plant in growing actively.
