Carnation of India

Carnation of India (Tabernaemontana divaricata) is an evergreen shrub grown for beautiful pinwheel shaped fragrant flowers. Native to India, Tabernaemontana’s leaves are dark green and pointed. The plant grows to a height of 4-6 feet with spread of 6 feet. It is also known as Crape jasmine, butterfly gardenia and pinwheel flower. It can be grown in container easily. The other variety of carnation of India is famous too which has double layered flowers.

Carnation of India is propagated through stem cuttings. Take 4-5 inches long softwood cutting (current year’s growth). Remove all leaves leaving 2-3 leaves at the top. Pinch out the growing point, doing so increases chances of rooting.  Dip the base of the cutting in a rooting hormone. However this step is optional. Insert the cutting 1-2 inches deep in soil mix in container and cover it with plastic bag.  Place the container in a shaded place.

However carnation of India can be grown in container successfully but it wouldn’t reach to its full height. Choose a large 12 inches high container. Container should have drainage holes to ensure water drainage out of the container. Put brick pieces or small stones on the drainage holes.
