How to Grow Larkspur (Delhinium) at Home
Delphinium is a multicolored, long lasting, upright spike winter annual. Also known as larkspur, it is very good for bedding. Larkspur requires cool temperature for successful germination. The plant grows to height of 40-80 cm and takes around 120 days to bloom.
Sowing From Seed
Larkspur seeds can be directly sown into ground as well as in pots. Prepare garden bed by mixing 1:1 ratio of organic manure and soil. Cow dung is an easily available organic manure. Soil less medium i.e. coco peat can also be used as sowing medium. Sprinkle seeds on the bed and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Cover the seed bed with a thin cloth and irrigate by hand held sprinkler twice daily till seeds germinate. Remove cloth sheet once the seedlings turn half cm tall.
The same way seedlings can be grown in pots. Buy branded high quality larkspur seeds here.
Medium soil is recommended for growing larkspur. Soil less media i.e. coco peat can be used too. Larkspur do well both in soil as well as soil less medium. Add vermicompost or compost to enrich the soil with organic matter.
Sunlight / Temperature
Larkspur is a winter annual. Full sun makes it happy. Sowing temperature should be 20°C -25°C .
As a rule of thumb, give plants water whenever soil is dry. Avoid over watering.
Keep distance of 30 cm between two plants to provide adequate air circulation. Give plants organic fertilizer once or twice a month to promote good foliage and blooms. Use high quality fertilizer to promote growth in your plants.
