Terrace gardening: Beginner’s step to step manual

You need just two things to start terrace gardening. One thing is your interest in it (which seems to be present, because otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this article), and another is a location where you can get sunlight, at least for 2-3 hours. The location can be balcony, ground space or terrace. There must be a water drainage outlet system in your balcony.

Follow below tips to start your own terrace garden !!

 

Plants of choice:

There are many plants, but a beginner should start with Areca Palm, Bougainvillea, Roses, Marigold, Mogra (Jasmium sambac), Songs of India, Euphorbia, Fern, Daisy, Rangoon Creeper.

Not only this, there are many vegetables like beans, lettuce, rhubarb, tomatoes and potatoes, which can be grown on terrace. The complete list of vegetables which can be grown is almost endless.

Container:

It could be anything like earthen pots, bucket, vegetable crate, milk crate or oil cans. Decorate the pots with beautiful designs. You can write the names of the plants outside the pots also.

Soil :

Research about best soil type for your plant. Loamy soil is ideal for most of the plants. Use organic matter like compost etc to enrich it with nutrients.

Plants need optimum amount of water, not more, not less, for their best growth. It never means that you have to measure the amount of water in milliliters. Please search through our website to understand the need of water for a particular plant or vegetable.

 

Sunlight:

Different plants need different amount of sunlight. Seeds under the soil in seed tray do not need direct sunlight for 1 or 2 weeks, or until they germinate. Use shading net, if the sun is very bright and the amount of heat is much.

Pests:

One common problem is of pests. Control it by spraying recommended pesticides.
